Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal issued a desperate call to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), stating the board should stand firm and not play against Indian in the future multi-nation tournaments after, what transpired during the post-match ceremony of the recent Asia Cup 2025 tournament. Having won the final by five wickets over Salman Ali Agha’s team, India declined to receive the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
Ex-Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal made an immediate appeal to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), stating the organization should stand firm and not play against Indian in the coming multi-nation tournaments after what occurred during the post-match ceremony of the just-concluded Asia Cup 2025 tournament. Having clinched the final by five wickets against Salman Ali Agha’s team, India declined to receive the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
The post-match ceremony was delayed for 45 minutes as India refused to move from their position of not retrieving the trophy from Naqvi, who is not only the head of PCB but also the Interior Minister of Pakistan. During the tournament, Naqvi posted anti-India remarks on his social media although he held the position of ACC head.
He vocally pledged allegiance to Pakistan’s cause, even going so far as to ask for the match referee, Andy Pycroft, to be withdrawn after the no-handshake controversy in the group stage match between India and Pakistan.
With this being an ICC event, there will be protocols in play, where both captains usually shake their hands at the toss. Even at the end of the game, players and support staff from both teams are required to shake hands.
He publicly pledged for Pakistan’s interests, going on to the extent of seeking the removal of the match referee, Andy Pycroft, after the no-handshake controversy in the group stage match between India and Pakistan. But with Suryakumar Yadav’s team not accepting the trophy from Naqvi, a huge furore arose within Pakistan’s cricketing community, and responses are pouring in thick and fast.
Pakistan board must immediately state that ‘we should never play against India’. The rest of the boards must sit together, tell us we can’t look at this in cricket. Sport isn’t played at somebody’s house. If other people do not play them, then no money is going to come,” Akmal told ARY News.
