Jofra Archer in Line for Test Return in Second Match Against India
Jofra Archer could make his long-awaited return to Test cricket during the second match of England’s upcoming series against India at Edgbaston next month. England’s national selector, Luke Wright, indicated that Archer may be available for selection—provided he proves his fitness during Sussex’s County Championship game against Durham at Chester-le-Street in two weeks’ time.
Now 30, Archer has not featured in red-ball cricket for over four years due to persistent injury setbacks, including repeated surgeries on his right elbow and a back stress fracture.
He had originally been considered for a return to first-class action with the England Lions against India A this week. However, a thumb ligament injury—picked up while fielding in the IPL—forced him out of contention.
Despite the latest setback, Archer is edging closer to a comeback. With England entering a crucial period in their Test calendar—including five matches against India followed by an Ashes tour—selectors are hopeful he can be reintegrated into the side.
“Jof is actually progressing very well,” said Wright. “The plan is for him to build up his workload with a couple of second XI games for Sussex. If things go to plan, he’s expected to play against Durham during the first Test [June 22-25], and if all goes well, he could be available for selection in the second Test.”
Archer last played a first-class match in May 2021 for Sussex against Kent, before his elbow issues resurfaced. His most recent Test appearance came earlier that year, in February, against India in Ahmedabad. Over his 13-Test career, Archer has taken 42 wickets at an average of 31.04, including two six-wicket hauls during the 2019 Ashes series.
“As with all our fast bowlers, it’s a step-by-step process with no guarantees,” Wright added. “But if he comes through the Durham match unscathed, he should be in the mix for the second Test.”
England’s five-match series against India kicks off on June 20 at Headingley, followed by Tests at Edgbaston (July 2–6) and Lord’s (July 10–14).
