In another twist for Pakistan cricket coaching situation, the Pakistan Cricket Board PCB has a split with its Test head coach just 3 months before his contract ended. This sends a clear message that the board want to reset its red ball setup quickly.

Sources say the decision was agreed upon after weeks of dogs because of Pakistan’s up and down test performances. His contract was supposed to end early next year, but the PCB decided to make a change now as part of a bigger strategy.

Why the PCB moved fast?

The timing of the decision is a bit of surprise, but people is close to the matter say it was because of result, the team atmosphere and future plans. Pakistan Test team has had trouble finding consistency specially when playing overseas. The board felt that keeping things as they were for another 3 months would not do any good.

Jason Gillespie was chosen as the Test head coach to rebuild Pakistan red ball team, get better fast bowlers and bring in a more disciplined approach. There was some good moments but consistency was missing so the PCB sped up its decision.

PBS official statement

The PCB thank the coach for his work, saying that the split was friendly and based on future planning. The board said it focused on making Pakistan Test structure stronger before a tough international schedule.

The statement said Pakistan cricket is entering an important time and we think now is the time to move ahead with a new red ball.

The PCB did not directly blame the decision on recent series results. Instead, they said it was a part of a long term plan, not just a reaction.

Is this a pattern?

The situation points out Pakistan cricket long struggle with keeping coaches for long. In the last 10 years, many head coaches and staff member had their time cut short because of performances pressure, change in management or different ideas about cricket.

Fans are split on whether these coaching changes help or hurt progress. Former players have often said that stability is important, especially in Test cricket where result take time.

What’s next?

Now that the test head coach position is open. The PCB will likely name an interim coach soon while they look at long term motions reports suggest the board might consider.

  •  A local person who knows Pakistan’s cricket system.
  •  A split coaching setup with different people for red ball and white ball cricket.
  •  Or well known overseas coach on a Short contract with bonuses based on performances.

The upcoming Test match will be important in deciding what happened next as the PCB tries to rebuild confidence and direction in the team.

Players reaction and words ahead

Sources say the players were told before the decision was announced to avoid problems for the team. Senior players are expected to take on more leadership. During this changes, especially, younger players are becoming key part of Pakistan test team.

As Pakistan look for stability in red ball cricket, this early contract and is clear message in Pakistan cricket plans can change, but expectations are high.

We will have to wait and see if this bold move ahead to a fresh start or just another chapter in the cycle of change.
