Former India captain and coach Rahul Dravid recently shared his thoughts on shorter batsmen. Through the years, cricket has seen many great players who were not very tall but still ruled the game with their batting. Among these cricketers, the most famous was the great Sachin Tendulkar, who started playing at just 16 years old and later became a cricket legend with many records.
Recently, Dravid talked about the great Sunil Gavaskar and Tendulkar and said how both players, despite being short, looked so smooth while playing their shots. But while speaking, Dravid also mentioned Virat Kohli and quickly realized his error.
"Gavaskar was a perfectly balanced player. I always remember, he always seemed to have a calmness when he stood, which is what I liked. I was always a bit taller, so I didn't copy anything. I just stood in a way that felt right for me. Tendulkar was also very balanced. Shorter players have the benefit of looking more stable because their center of balance is lower," said Dravid on the Haal Chaal Aur Sawaal Podcast with Ashish Kaushik.
"That's what people say. Many great batsmen over the years have been shorter players. Look at Gavaskar, or Tendulkar or [Brian] Lara or [Ricky] Ponting... going back to [Donald] Bradman. Kohli is on the shorter side. Virat Kohli may not like me saying he's on the shorter side, though," he added.
However, "The Wall" also said that because the game format and playing style have changed, taller batsmen now have more benefits.
"But now, as cricket is changing and becoming more about power and hitting big shots. The longer reach of taller players is becoming helpful. Science will tell you this. Kevin Pietersen, Kieron Pollard. Look at the players who are batting today, especially in T20 matches," he said.
