The Asia Cup 2025 match between India and Pakistan fully justified its reputation as one of the most scintillating derbies in global cricket. Played at the Dubai International Stadium on a sold-out Sunday night, the high-octane match witnessed India beat Pakistan by 23 runs in a thriller. Yet, the game's intensity had spill-over effects beyond the scoreboard, with post-match tension boiling over as Indian players infamously avoided the traditional handshake with their Pakistani counterparts — a move that has since generated heated debate throughout the cricketing fraternity.

A Clash Worth the Wait

Whenever India and Pakistan are pitched against each other, cricket becomes more than a sport. All the months of waiting and emotional hype were worth it as the two teams presented a thrilling encounter. India, with Shubman Gill at the helm, showed tactical prowess, but Pakistan, with Babar Azam as their captain, battled till the very end.

Batting first after winning the toss, India posted a formidable 298/8 in their allotted 50 overs. The innings was anchored by Virat Kohli’s vintage 87 off 92 balls and a quickfire 63 from Suryakumar Yadav, whose innovative strokeplay left the crowd in awe. Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah bowled with heart, sharing five wickets between them, but the Indian middle order managed to stabilize the innings in crucial phases.

Pakistan’s Brave Chase Falls Short

Responding, Pakistan started positively with openers Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman contributing 74 runs for the opening wicket. But when Jasprit Bumrah sent back Fakhar with a beautifully bowled slower ball, India started to slowly tighten its stranglehold. Babar Azam's elegant 68 kept Pakistan in contention, but the game changed when Kuldeep Yadav sent back both Babar and Rizwan in the same over, turning the balance decisively in favor of India.

In spite of a late rally by Iftikhar Ahmed and Shadab Khan, Pakistan were bowled out for 275 in 48.3 overs. Bumrah took 3/45 and was awarded the Player of the Match award for his accuracy and calmness under pressure.

The Missing Handshake

What could have finished on a note of sportsmanship instead ended amidst observable tension. When the last wicket fell, Indian players were over with elation but held back from extending the customary handshake after every match. Cameras showed Gill and Kohli

directly approaching the dugout, while Rohit Sharma and Bumrah shared a few words before walking off the field.

Pakistani players, visibly surprised, stood in line briefly before moving away. The gesture — or lack of it — immediately got social media buzzing. Social media users and analysts on both sides started speculating over the reason for the avoided handshake, with opinions sharply divided.

Sources of Tension

As per reports from within the team, the discord started earlier in the game when some exchanges of words among players developed beyond reasonable limits. An angry confrontation between Kohli and Shadab Khan following a tight LBW appeal in the 35th over seemed to get people's tempers fired up. Also, Pakistan's aggressive send-offs upon Indian wickets reportedly did not go down with the Indian team.

Though the Indian management has not issued any official statement, sources indicate that the decision to skip the handshake was made in order to "prevent further confrontation." A high official of the BCCI said in media reports, "The players were instructed to depart from the field in a peaceful manner after the match. The mood was tense and best to avoid any unwanted episodes."

Expert and Fan Reactions

Ex-cricketers and pundits have expressed varied views. Gautam Gambhir, during a post-match program, said, "Emotions are high in an India-Pakistan game but players need to stick by the spirit of cricket. The handshake is a symbol of respect, even in victory or defeat."

Meanwhile, former Pakistan captain Shoaib Akhtar described India's action as "unsporting," adding, "You can win a match but lose respect if you walk away like that. Cricket is about character."

Social media was divided, with Indian fans coming to the defense of their team citing "on-field provocation," while Pakistani fans lambasted the act as "unsportsmanlike." Hashtag #HandshakeGate soon started trending globally.

The Spirit of Rivalry

India-Pakistan games have ever been about pride, history, and national feeling. Each delivery, every wicket has significance far greater than the cricket pitch. But this episode caught the eye for the way passion can diffuse distinctions between competitiveness and controversy.

Though the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will officially take up the issue, it is said that the committee of the Asia Cup has not only seen the post-match behavior but also taken a note of it. Whether disciplinary action is initiated or not is yet to be known, but it is certain that this incident has seen renewed debates about sportsmanship and pressure players endure in high-pressure rivalries.

For India, the victory cemented their status at the top of the group and all but ensured a semi-finals spot. For Pakistan, they continue to have hope to make a comeback, based on strong results in the rest of their matches.

And yet, beyond numbers and rankings, the handshake row could cast a cloud over future encounters. As both countries look ahead to potential rematches in the remainder of the tournament, the globe will be monitoring not only the runs and wickets — but gestures of respect that constitute the game's genuine spirit.
